Early views of Melbourne by Robert Russell

Robert Russell was the lead surveyor for the Port Phillip District in 1836 and published an early printed topographical survey of Melbourne. The survey documented the layout of the Central Business District, which later became known as Hoddle’s Grid, based on a standard grid plan drawn by Robert Hoddle who succeeded Russell as surveyor-in-charge in 1837. The area featured native vegetation like tea tree scrub and she oaks. Prominent landmarks included Batman’s Hill (now Southern Cross Station), Burial Hill (site of Melbourne’s first cemetery, now Flagstaff Gardens), Batman’s Swamp (later the West Melbourne Swamp), and the Yarra Falls. The Yarra Falls marked the merging of tidal water downstream and freshwater upstream, and they were removed for Queens Bridge in the 1880s. Russell was also an artist who created drawings and watercolours of the Yarra Falls, often using early township sketches as a basis. These works document the natural landscape of early Melbourne shortly after European colonization before major industrial environmental changes.
