Manifestaciones por la vivienda hoy en España, en directo | Tres detenidos tras una concentración de Núcleo Nacional al intentar acceder a la acampada de Sol

Massive demonstrations concerning housing in Spain occurred across Madrid and other cities, culminating in calls for a general strike. In Madrid, tens of thousands protested the housing crisis following the rejection of housing decrees by the Congress. A demonstration involving groups like Núcleo Nacional and Indignados por España attempted to advance to the Puerta del Sol, resulting in police blockades and detentions of at least three individuals. In Granada, a demonstration concluded with a camp on the Palacio de Congresos grounds, attended by thousands advocating against housing business. In Oviedo, a concentration occurred near the housing camp where participants protested against alleged fascist aggression. Further demonstrations took place in Valencia, where protests led to police action and arrests, and in the Canary Islands where demonstrators demanded housing as a right. Various organized groups, including Sindicato de Inquilinas, were involved across multiple cities seeking action against housing costs.

The narrative of the Spanish housing protests reveals a complex interaction between grassroots mobilization, political deadlock, and state response. The events showcase how disparate groups—from anti-fascist collectives to tenant unions—converge around a shared grievance regarding housing costs and systemic failures. The dynamic observed in Madrid, where demonstrations aimed for symbolic locations like the Puerta del Sol but were met with significant police intervention, highlights the tension between public assembly and state control. A key pattern emerges in how different actors frame the conflict: some emphasize class struggle and popular power ("huelga general," "poder popular"), while others focus on legal and political processes (rejecting decrees). The presence of elements like Núcleo Nacional suggests an infiltration or juxtaposition of extreme right elements within broader social movements, which complicates the reading of unified resistance. Furthermore, the shift in protest strategy—from large-scale marches to localized camps, and later to calls for general strikes—indicates an evolving response to perceived institutional inaction. This trajectory prompts inquiry into whether the focus on immediate demands (rent control) overshadows or inadvertently legitimizes the broader structural critique of the rental system itself.
